More than 300 aspirants in Uganda turned up for this year’s Tusker Project Fame auditions held at Hotel Africana on Saturday and Sunday. Only nine have made it to the final hurdle, where the best three will be selected to enter the academy on June 2 though.
Following the successful jam-packed two-day auditions, Sharon Nalwoga, Abu Roy Ssekiranda, Daniel Lubinga, Ivan Kakembo, Herman Kavuma, Samalie Muwanika, Rebecca Sammie Nambi, Allan Kyle and Sammy Katumwa were announced as the nine still in with a chance.
The auditions were filmed and footage of these nine will be sent to a panel of judges at East African Breweries Limited (EABL) in Nairobi, who will choose the final three to represent Uganda in the Nairobi finals.
It was drama all the way as each of the hopefuls tried to buy their way into the finale on Day One of the auditions. Some sang well while others screeched. The three judges, Juliana Kanyomozi, Martha Musinguzi and Mathew Nabwiso, were on hand to separate contenders from pretenders, trimming the over three hundred aspirants down to 90, who returned for more screening on Day Two.
“We’re looking for a special voice, something new, vibrant and with confidence and originality,” said Juliana, who is also a judge on the main show. “As we move into the Fifth Season, we not only aspire to unearth new talent but also raise the standards.”
Juliana said that she was also impressed by some candidates on the auditions.
“It is just amazing how much Ugandans love music,” she exclaimed. “The turn-up was good and we got some good singers.”
The selected three will also be joined by three from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan to make up the 18 contestants.
