We have come to that stage where some fans respect musicians for how much financial muscle they’ve been able to exhibit. How much a musician can spend on cars, houses, investments, a wedding and trips abroad; greatly determines how much respect they earn from fans!
This has given birth to a debate that I’ve for some time now, observed from the side lines; the debate about the spending routine of Ugandan musicians. This is a debate that has torn Ugandan music fans into two major camps, each taking different sides of the debate.
The first camp comprises of people who believe that our stars suffer from rural urban migration. This camp argues that some stars buy expensive monster rides which they can’t afford to fuel and rarely drive them. That these are rides they just put in their music videos and press photo shoots; but actually drive the less fuel consuming ones.
But then also comes a camp which believes that just like the name suggests, show biz is about showing off. That how much you can spend makes you a bigger star. They argue that this is the trend world over, where stars must have the most expensive of things. They add that if you can’t afford expensive things as a star, then you are a good for nothing star.
This phenomenon has even taken center stage in the beef between certain musicians. We have heard musicians assuring their nemeses how they own no house and have not thrown a mega wedding. While others reaffirm that they are not in a hurry to make such hefty ventures!
Well, whether or not the debate is healthy, is not for me to decide. I throw this back to you.
