At 8:14 PM, the third annual Diva Music Awards officially kicked off with the singing of the Uganda national Anthem, Theatre La Bonita was already getting filled to capacity with hundreds of happy though anxious fans waiting to see their 2011 Diva Awards nominees win.
After the national anthem , one of the best Dancing couple as rated among dancing professionals’ circles ‘Natasha Sinayobye and Michael’ came on stage to perform a lovely welcome dance on a fused track that combined African and an Asian touch. On a rare night like this one, for my first time in Uganda, I was on an event and heard only Ugandan music being played from start to end.
From that, the event went on smoothly with a no joking MC Mary from newly launched Urban TV; a local TV station and MIK as co MC.
Different young and talented uprising artists came on stage performing their hits one artist after the other. These included; Liane Nakaweesi with Holiday, Hindu Asha performing Nzize, G.Snake performing Kampala Enyuma Kiro with her Snake, Viva Stars, vocally talented Jemimah Sanyu put up an amazing show and Last Lyrical Blessing (LLB) who rapped and left smiles on the faces of all attending fans.
Iryn Namubiru emerged biggest winner of the night, winning Diva Collabo accolade for Yani song with Julie Mutesasira, RnB Diva award and Super Diva award. Winning 3 awards from Diva awards brings Iryn Namubiru to 7 awards in 2011; she won 4 accolades including Artist of the year in the 2011 PAM awards.
Juliana Kanyomozi was the biggest contender for this year in Diva awards, she was nominated in 5 categories namely Super Diva, Exceptional Video; Alive again, Outstanding Song with Sanyu Lyange, Afrobeat Diva, and RnB Diva. Juliana took home the Afrobeat Diva award; she last year won the RnB accolade. Previously, Juliana brought home the first ever East African female artist of the year award from Kenya.
Talking about attendance, Theatre La Bonita was filled to capacity with smartly dressed and supportive music fans from different places of the country. Legendary actor Aloysius Matovu Joy was the Guest of Honor for the event.
Angella Katatumba took home the humanitarian Diva special recognition award; she was escorted by her father and mother, Mr. Katatumba Bonny and Mrs. Gertrude Katatumba.
